About canned pumpkin
Los Angeles, Ca, A year ago I set out to create a delicious pumpkin bread recipe. After multiple taste tests I finally created a delicious bread I was happy with. One of the major components to a delicious bread was great canned pumpkin and with so many on the market I wasn’t sure which one was the best so I put them to the test. I made the same bread with different kinds of canned pumpkin and believe it or not they didn’t taste the same. The difference wasn’t huge but it was enough to know that a good brand of pumpkin will make your pumpkin bread the best it can be. The cost between the cans of pumpkin are so minimal I am certain it wouldn’t play a role in which one you purchase.
Which canned pumpkin was my favorite you ask?
My canned pumpkin stamp of approval goes to Farmers Market Organic canned pumpkin and a classic Libby’s canned 100% pumpkin puree- they are both delicious.
For all of you out there who love to make homemade pumpkin puree I support your efforts. I agree that baking your own pumpkin is a fresher way to make pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread etc. Things to think of though before you try it at home-
- It may or may not be consistent in flavor,
- It’s considerably more effort,
- Have you taste tested canned vs. fresh to see if it really makes a difference for you personally.
If you ask yourself these questions and it still makes sense for you to roast your own pumpkin, do it and don’t look back, and here is my roasted pumpkin recipe to help you.
If you ask yourself these questions and you decide not to make pumpkin from scratch I will say I do love these varieties of canned pumpkin and here’s why….
Farmers Market Pumpkin-Has a smooth light pumpkin flavor without a lingering bitter flavor in the after taste.
Libby’s canned pumpkin-Is slightly clumpy, slightly sweet, thicker, gorgeous color and no bitter after taste.
Not our favorite- Trader Joe’s: nice consistency, but pale orange color, too subtle in flavor and lingering after taste.
Do you have a favorite canned pumpkin? I/we want to know.
